Cycle through an art installation

NEWHeat – an initiative funded by One NorthEast to encourage businesses across the region to switch their heat energy supply to wood heat – has teamed up with the Northumberland Lights festival to offer cyclists the chance to experience an unusual cycle ride at Kielder Water & Forest Park on Wednesday 12th November.

The Wood Rush will take cyclists from Kielder Castle to Leaplish Waterside Park and back, against the backdrop of the night sky. The event has been designed to illuminate NEWHeat’ mission to change the energy cycle and drastically reduce carbon emissions.

David Clubb, Project Director of NEWHeat said: “The NEWHeat service has become increasingly popular with more and more businesses across the North East waking up to wood heat as a serious alternative to fossil fuels when it comes to heat energy. Northumberland Lights seemed a great way to highlight what we’re doing in the North East, especially as Kielder Water & Forest Park, in particular, is one of the region’ richest sources of sustainable woodland. With wood chip being in such high demand as the energy source of the future, the Wood Rush seemed a perfect opportunity to engage the public in our mission and the most appropriate name for this fast-paced, forest-based cycling event”

En route, at mid point of the 13km trail, cyclists will weave a 2km “dreamlike path” created by the Northumberland Lights team. It will be a “beautiful animation by Britain’ finest visual and auditory outdoor talent,” said festival Director, Zoe Bottrell.

“The Wood Rush is the first time we’ve organised a specific event for cyclists, and its one in which the riders can enjoy the light and sound installations our artists have created en route, whilst also becoming a part of the art themselves.”

Northumberland Lights is part of North East England’ programme of festivals and events developed by culture¹º.

The Wood Rush night time cycle ride takes place on Wednesday 12th November between 6.30 and 10pm. Tickets cost £10 and include refreshments. Cyclists are invited to register and depart Kielder Castle any time between 6.30pm to 8.00pm.

Places are limited and must be pre-booked. All tickets are now on sale and are available from Hexham Tourist Information Centre. Telephone 01434 652220 or email [email protected].
